The Ronettes vs. The Beatles

aka ‘wut?’

Back with a bang making a rather risky claim. I promise I’ve thought it through, but it just so happens that WHENEVER I hear the opening of the Ronettes’ ‘Be My Baby’, I instantly think of the two lines off one of my favourite Beatles songs ‘And I Love Her’.

As always, I might be alone in a corner with my observations, but dammit, I make the connection EVERY TIME and that’s reason enough to post it.

The more I listen to this, the more I think it’s just me. Perhaps it’s the ‘if’ bit. Perhaps the songs are too well-known to everyone else. Perhaps I need to do a better mashup to prove my point. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps HEY AT LEAST I’M STILL AROUND, eh, how about some credit there?

Jet vs. the Verve

Mere words cannot express how agonising it is to put this up.

It’s bad enough one of the bands is Jet. We already knew they’d taken the intro to ‘Look What You’ve Done’ from Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ which in turn was happily mooched from Lennon‘s ‘Imagine’ – I’m not even going into that.

But when it came on mutedly at a cafe, and I heard the launch of the chorus, I found myself singing along to it – only I wasn’t singing the song that was playing, I was singing a song by the Verve called ‘Sonnet.’

I haven’t found anyone else on the internets who’s noticed the similarity, but be warned, if I get any sort of flak on this or if my love for the Verve is called into question I will track you down and cut off your ears. It was traumatic enough to have to piece this together. I edited the audio for ‘Sonnet’ solely by sight. I can’t bear to listen to a Verve song if I can’t hear it in its most uninterrupted, crystalline form.

This hurts.

The Fall vs. Iggy and the Stooges

My punk/post-punk knowledge, while not sadly lacking, is not as excellent as I’d like it to be. Credit for this goes to my favourite Brit and all-round BFF. His band broke up when I was 6 but I have been belatedly appointed its manager.

Oh, and by ‘this’ I mean the resemblance The Fall‘s track ‘Elves’ has to Iggy and the Stooges‘ ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’. Who knew? Well, maybe you.

The Dandy Warhols vs. Donna Summer

‘The World The People Together (Come On)’ sounds characteristically like The Dandy Warhols, but more to the point, it has a bit of Donna Summer‘s ‘I Feel Love’ lurking about in it. Your mission is to fish out the 70s disco from underneath the chaotic jangle.

Asobi Seksu vs. REM

A comment left on my last post accuses me of ‘clutching at straws. I DISAGREE. However I am just one person and, nonetheless, my ears’ reputation MUST be maintained. So – have you already heard Asobi Seksu‘s live ‘n’ acoustic version of ‘Thursday’ and if so did you catch the ‘Everybody Hurts’ opening? Or am I just a terrible REM fan for having taken this long to place it?

Exit Calm vs. Oasis

Wait, what? Someone sounds like Oasis? Not the other way around? whaaaat? WHO IS THIS OVERTURNER OF WORLDS?

Why it’s Exit Calm! Here’s a possibly dodgy comparison involving 6 seconds of ‘With Angels’ off their self-titled debut. I think of ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ every time I hear it.

Airiel vs. Highspire vs. Ride

It’s been a while, I know, and this is because FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE I am actually, honestly working on things instead of faffing about pretending to do so. Clearly not working on this, though. Bad, me, very bad. I’ll make it up to you. Here is a shoegaze three-way (ooo, kinky!):

I can say with 99.9% confidence that ‘Skies You Climb’ by Highspire is my favourite shoegaze song ever, of all time, till the end of time and beyond. It kills me a little bit every time I hear it – ‘petit mort’ for the ears. you could say. Anyway, its arresting opening is v. v. v. similar to the seminal ‘Vapour Trail’ by Ride

But that’s not all! Compare the start of ‘Skies You Climb’ to ‘Stay’ by fellow neo-gazers Airiel and you’ve got some beautiful musical incest going on.

Interpol vs. Air Formation

Ohhhh Interpol, if it weren’t for us giving you the benefit of doubt, we’d have the Regular Pol on your tail for petty theft – geddit? geddit? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA …. that wasn’t actually funny, sorry.

HANG ON A MINUTE – Interpol sounds like Air Formation? HOW ARE THESE TWO THINGS EVEN RELATE… let’s not try to wrap our heads around that. Thanks ever so much to the ever patient Tom with the lovely hair (and the spectacularly varied and consistently amazing music taste) for bringing to light the completely unexpected resemblance ‘Next Exit’ has to ‘Into View’

Charmparticles vs. The Smashing Pumpkins

It’ll be a miracle if this post goes up as my internet connection is currently not much of one.

So you know the Smashing Pumpkins‘ distinctive ‘1979’ hook? dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-DONK? Of course you do, everyone does. Well there’s this song by Charmparticles called ‘Relapse’ which has nary a non-vocal second on it. However listen to the underlying ‘dun-dun-dun-dun-dun’ bassline and you’ll find it difficult to keep yourself from unwittingly inserting a culminating ‘DONK’.

The Stone Roses vs. The Church

So the friend who features in the last post reckons this is a way better example than the one I had to offer. Apart from the similarly slithering guitars on The Stone Roses‘ ‘Waterfall’ and The Church‘s ‘A New Season’, he also points out the – coincidentally? – matching lyrical imagery. “She’s a waterfall” vs. “Girl bathing in crystal waters.”  It could just be a fluke. You be the judge. Of both.
